Christmas in Connecticut (1945)

Journalist Elizabeth Lane is one of the country's most famous food writer. In her columns, she describes herself as a hard working farm woman, taking care of her children and being an excellent cook. But this is all lies. In reality she is an umarried New Yorker who can't even boil an egg. The recipes come from her good friend Felix. The owner of the magazine she works for has decided that a heroic sailor will spend his christmas on *her* farm. Miss Lane knows that her career is over if the truth comes out, but what can she do?

Right up front I want to say this movie should probably be called a Christmas lie in Connecticut. That is after all the whole idea behind it. Let me explain:

Barbara Stanwyck plays the main character. She's the Martha Stewart of her time. She writes articles for the magazine she works for telling all about her life at her farmhouse. Her cooking, her baby, her husband, her animals. The only problem is she lives in an apartment in NY. She can't cook. She's not married. She wouldn't know what to do with a cow if it walked into her kitchen, which almost does happen at one point in the movie.

Her boss is in on the whole scam, unfortunately for them both the owner of the magazine is not. And that is where things start to get complicated. The owner receives a letter from a young nurse, asking him to arrange for a soldier (who had been found after being lost at sea) to visit the farmhouse at Christmas time, so he might see what its like to be in a nice home, because the nurse wants the soldier to settle down and marry her. The magazine owner agrees to set the whole thing up. He manages to talk Barbara into the visit, and also invites himself along. From here on in, everyone is trying to cover up the lie. Barbara, her boss, the gentleman who wishes to marry Barbara and the old man who gives Barbara all the recipes for her articles. Needless to say without ruining the story, it's a mess trying to keep everything straight.

I don't know how much of a Christmas movie this actually is. Its more of a romance film, with comedy and a Christmas setting. Still very enjoyable, and fun to watch.
